Jan lives with his wife and two sons in a house in the forest, with views over a lake, at the end of a road he built himself with no neighbors in sight. When deciding to build a massive concrete garage weighing over 200 tonnes, Jan became concerned about the environmental implications. Due the high volumes of carbon dioxide generated during the process, he found that concrete production is a main contributor to global warming. The estimated amount of carbon emissions for his garage (including transportation) was no less than 40,000 kg.

When looking for ways to compensate for this, Jan came across Root to Fruit and realized that 200 trees planted was exactly what was needed to neutralize the carbon emissions generated from his building project. In an effort to offset the rest of the carbon emissions from his daily activities throughout the year, he eventually decided to purchase a total of 250 trees.
